Indigenous, native cultures consider the place where they live to be very important and integral in their lives. Often, aboriginal people see no separation between themselves and the land where they live. Therefore, many native cultures have lived for millennia in harmony and balance with the natural world that sustains them. My personal connection with nature runs deep. It began during my early childhood in forests, meadows, and along woodland ponds that surrounded my boyhood home in Massachusetts. The land I played in and explored was located near the site where Henry David Thoreau built his log cabin beside Walden Pond, whose surrounding woodlands and swamps I have walked through many times and swam in the spring-fed waters.
